The Scotsman review

2018 brought another critically acclaimed solo Edinburgh show, Jimmy’s eighth to date. ‘Need(y)’ was standing room only most days on the Free Festival at the Pear Tree in Edinburgh. Read The Scotsman’s 4 star review of it here: – Jimmy McGhie review.

After a short stint Los Angeles in October, you can catch Jimmy at all the top comedy clubs around the country until Christmas. See the ‘Live’ section for exact dates and locations. In February 2019 he will be off on tour down under, a long three month stretch taking in Adelaide Fringe, Canberra Comedy Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Perth Comedy Festival, Sydney Comedy Festival and the New Zealand Comedy Festival….phew! he will be headlining the prestigious ‘Best of the Edinburgh Fest’ showcase as well as performing the critically acclaimed ‘Need(y)’.

Then it will be home at the end of May to preview solo show number nine, ‘The Bachelor’, all over London and the rest of the country before making it’s debut at the Edinburgh Fringe in August 2019. He is currently writing on a number of exciting projects in development for Global Radio, Leopard Films and ITV Drama. Jimmy recently hosted the 2018 Vuelio Blog Awards and for the second year in a row, the 2018 ProSound Awards. He also performed at the HSBC Annual Christmas party to great acclaim and he has a number of exciting corporate events lined up for 2019.

Jimmy was an Assistant Producer for the BBC’s Science and History Dept, having spent seven years working in factual television before he ran off to join the stand up comedy circus professionally in 2009. Since then he has performed stand up all over the world and appeared on numerous television and radio programmes including the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5, Comedy Central, ABC Australia, THREE New Zealand, Absolute Radio and many more.

He is “a brilliant talent” (The Scotsman) and with “an easy charm and appealing relaxed manner” (Chortle), he has performed 10 solo shows at festivals around the world including the Edinburgh Fringe, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Adelaide Fringe, Sydney Comedy Festival, Perth Comedy Festival and New Zealand International Comedy festival.

He is now a top circuit act in the UK, as well as a highly sought after corporate awards host and TV warm up artist. He regularly provides the studio warm up for BBC1’s Graham Norton Show, ITV’s Loose Women and Ch4’s Deal or No Deal.

NEED(Y) Edinburgh 2018

An analogue man in a digital world, marooned as a bachelor amongst a sea of marriages and kids, Jimmy continues to steer clear of anything too serious in life and not step on any millennial language land mines.

"This is all tightly-packed, twinkly, high-octane funny. I have no idea why this man is not all over Live at the Apollo like a rash."

★★★★ The Scotsman

Edinburgh 2017 He has finally checked in his ego and will be appearing as part of the socialist utopia of the Free Festival. A proper pro for no dough!

‘McGhie reminds you that an hour of pure stand-up comedy can be a great thing’

APOLOGIA Edinburgh 2016

This is Jimmy's sixth solo hour, so according to best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell, that means he's only 9,994 hours away from being brilliant. Not that it's Jimmy's fault it's taking so long.

Confronting masculinity, mortality, the sins of the father and his complete inability to resist a good salesman. Along the way he encounters some vicious anti-corporate satirists, and explains how various early childhood humiliations made him what he is today: a clown.

★★★★ Scotsman

Painfully brilliant, pathologically charming and frequently deluded Jimmy McGhie slinks back to Edinburgh after bunking last year. After performing to great acclaim all over the world, from Mumbai to Melbourne, Jimmy returns with more soulful and searingly honest stand-up.

“Grown-up, insightful comedy that isn’t dependent on shock value and still had me thinking about issues he’d raised hours after the show. Excellent.”

★★★★ Chortle

“Last year I said he had “one to watch” stamped on his forehead; well, this year he has “see him now before you have to queue around the O2″ stamped on his forehead. There are few comics I can think of who have the sheer star quality of Jimmy McGhie. He is the perfect little comedy package.”

★★★★ Scotsman

“Hilarious, self deprecating and lovable… A fantastic storyteller.”

★★★★★ Three Weeks

“He is wonderful with audience interaction, smartly self-effacing and I cannot think of any possible reason for his not being a huge star.”
